The Burial of the Soldiers
from the War of 1812 - Detroit
The American Troop Soldiers from the War of 1812, regained Detroit on September 29, 1813, soon after, due to the lack of quarters, food supplies and medical attention, a disease resembling cholera broke out among the soldiers.
By December 1, 1813, nearly 1,300 officers and men were sick. With medical supplies almost gone, conditions worsened. Coffins soon became unobtainable, and many solders were buried in a common grave site located at Washington Boulevard and Michigan Avenue, Detroit. It is estimated that 700 soldiers may have died before the epidemic ran its course.
Many remains have been excavated during several different construction projects. A Michigan Historical Marker is located at the site, that was erected in 1964 to those who perished.
