West Sebewa Cemetery - Odessa Township, Ionia County, Michigan

The West Sebewa Cemetery was officially established about 1845. The original cemetery was started by the First Baptist Church of Sebewa. The cemetery is located on the S.W. corner of Goddard Road and Musgrove Highway in Lake Odessa, Ionia County, Sebewa Township, Michigan, just west of the church. The land was most likely owned by the Leak family since they owned the surrounding acreage and continue to own it today. They were members of the church.

In 1926, a law was passed which made the cemetery the property of the township of Odessa. The law stated that if a cemetery was not cared for properly, it would become the property of the township and would be maintained by that township.

This particular cemetery has several stones too difficult to read and there are some unanswered questions about a couple of the occupants who are believed to be buried there.

The current sexton of the West Sebewa Cemetery is Grayden Slowin who has been in that position since 1968.

Mr. Slowin indicated that the Carpenter family were originally buried in a cemetery located on the S.W. corner of Kimmel and Tupper roads. All the bodies were moved, and the Carpenters were moved to the Sebewa Cemetery. The Reeder family were also moved, but they are located at the East Sebewa Cemetery.
